In 2000 Phd in archaeology at Stockholm University. In 2010 senior lecturer in Archaeology, Gotland University. Since 2013 member Department of Archaeology and Ancient History and reader in Archaeology. Between 2003-2006 post doc “Kaupang Excavation” project, 2014-2015 researcher “Religion and Money” project, Norwegian research council, University of Oslo. My research concerns the concept of money in its different material expressions in the Iron Age and Middle Ages. How did people in the past imagine and articulate economic and monetary value? My research topics and questions are: The use and significance of Islamic dirhems in long distance trade, different practices of weighing and valuing silver in the Viking world, urbanization and urban life styles on Gotland, the phenomenon of offering of coins in churches and concept of salvation in medieval society. How did the introduction of silver influence concepts of wealth, ownership, gender relationships and inheritance in Viking society?

Helene is a Professor of archaeology at Uppsala University, based at Campus Gotland, and an Adjunct Professor at The National University of Samoa. Her main areas of research include Pacific Archaeology with a focus on Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and Independent Samoa; Scandinavian archaeology with a focus on the Baltic Islands of Gotland and Åland, and the Neolithic and Bronze Age Phases. She has also participated in research in Northern Peru on Huaca monuments. Research topics include colonisation, monuments, social space and cultural heritage management, neolithisation processes and landscape changes.

In my dissertation I analysed changes in settlement patterns and landscape utilisation on Gotland in a diachronic perspective, from c. AD 200-1700, with the help of GIS. The use of GIS in archaeology and spatial analysis is an avenue I have continued to pursue in my work and teaching, primarily on Gotlandic source material, especially historical maps. In Sweden we are fortunate to possess millions of detailed village maps, from the early 17thcentury and onwards, which it is possible to analyse in GIS. In more recent years I have developed a great interest in historical archaeology, especially fortifications.

Ing-Marie is Associate Professor in Archaeology and has been the research leader of a number of archaeological projects since the defense of her doctoral dissertation in 2007. Her projects have focused on bodily transformations, relations, and becoming in Late Iron Age Scandinavia (c. AD 550–1050), as manifested through a variety of archaeological materials, such as for instance burials, imagery, and rune-stones. She has also discussed the relational effects and affects of material culture in reduced (miniaturization) and enlarged (gigantism) formats at places of worship during the Late Iron Age in Scandinavia. Although her research interests also include the archaeology of contemporary death, the use of theory and method in general in archaeology (including gender and feminisms), and the history of archaeology, her main passion presently lies in exploring and using new materialism when analyzing material culture in the form of art and imagery.

Charlotte Hedenstierna-Jonson is part of the Viking Phenomenon research project. With a background in field archaeology and as senior curator at the Swedish History Museum (SHM) she has held research fellowships at SHM, Stockholm University and the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum (RGZM) in Mainz. Previous research projects have focused on warfare, identities, mobility and material culture in Late Iron Age – Viking Age societies. Within the Viking Phenomenon she coordinates work in the sub-project Viking Economics aiming at exploring the economy and organisation of Viking raids and their impact when shaping Scandinavian identities. Key issues relate to how the raids were structured, including comparative studies on piracy, what role women played and the importance of slave-taking and trafficking, both when raiding and in society at large. Her research focus in the project include movements along the eastern trade routes and the contacts between Scandinavians and various groups of the Eurasian steppe.

Dr. Daniel Löwenborg is a Senior Lecturer in archaeology at Uppsala University, specializing in GIS, spatial analysis, archaeological databases, quantitative methods and 3D visualization. He finished his PhD, titled “Excavating the Digital Landscape” in 2010, and has been working as an associate professor at the University of Bergen since 2012, and teaching courses in GIS and archaeology in China (Lanzhou, Shandong and Shanghai) since 2014. The main focus of his research is to make use of large volumes of data from excavations on a regional and national scale and aggregate this data for analysis of social change, using methods from computer science. He has also worked with 3D documentation and visualization projects in Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Zimbabwe, and is a co-founder of the company Disir Productions that are developing the concept Augmented History.

Carl-Gösta Ojala is a researcher in archaeology at the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History, Uppsala University. His main research interests include Sámi history, archaeology and heritage. He is interested in issues of identity, nationalism, indigeneity, politics and ethics in archaeology, including debates on cultural rights, repatriation and reburial. His recent research has focused on early modern colonial history and its present-day implications in Sápmi (the Sámi areas), the exploitation of natural resources in Sápmi and the collecting of Sámi material culture in the 17th and 18th centuries. His current research also deals with interregional contacts in the Bronze Age of northern Sweden and Northern Fennoscandia. Ojala is the author of Sámi Prehistories: The Politics of Archaeology and Identity in Northernmost Europe (Uppsala University, 2009) and co-editor of Archaeologies of “Us” and “Them”: Debating History, Heritage and Indigeneity (with Charlotta Hillerdal and Anna Karlström, Routledge, 2017).

I am an archaeologist whose primary research interests lie in the Viking Age, particularly the study of conflict and military organisation and their impacts on societies living in Scandinavia and the wider, early medieval world. My current research project focuses on the comparative archaeology of captivity and slavery in Scandinavia during the 8th-11th centuries, and how these processes were related to the formation of socio-political hierarchies, economic strategies, and maritime violence. Since completing my PhD, I have sought expand my research into a second field by developing a lifelong personal interest in the archaeology of the Second World War, and I am currently working with several members of the Core-to-Core network to explore the archaeology and heritage of the 1941-45 Pacific War.

After many years within contract archaeology in Sweden, Andreas Hennius is now a doctoral student at the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History at Uppsala University. He works with a project about resource exploitation and colonisation in areas beyond the agrarian-based settlements of the 6th to 13th centuries in Scandinavia. In his work, there are case studies on tar production, hunting for terrestrial as well as marine mammals, and studies on how refined products from these activities are put into circulation through interregional trade networks to end up in burials or at settlement sites far from their place of origin. He has also undertaken extensive work on the historic exploitation of forested areas.
